1956 Map of Charley River C-1

About this map

The Alaska Yukon United States Canada international border defines the eastern edge of this mid-century survey, where the Interior's river systems converge in a landscape devoid of roads or trails. The Kandik River winds through the northern half of the quadrangle, joined by the aptly named Big Sitdown Creek and Charley Creek. To the south, the Nation River cuts across the territory, collecting waters from Indian Grave Creek and Jungle Creek. High points are marked by survey stations such as VABM 4240 Union and the prominent Indian Grave Mountain. This mapping effort, based on 1955 aerial photography and 1956 field annotation, documents a period of systematic geodetic surveying in the far north, utilizing vertical angle benchmark (VABM) stations to establish elevation in this remote drainage basin.
