The Salcha River basin dominates this interior Alaska landscape, where high ridgelines and deep drainage patterns define the boundary between the Steese National Conservation Area to the north and the Yukon-Charley Rivers National Preserve to the southeast. The terrain is a network of steep-sided valleys carved by a series of significant tributaries, including Cottonwood Cr, Willow Cr, and Williams Cr. These waterways flow through the complex topography of the Fairbanks North Star Borough and the Yukon-Koyukuk Census Area.
