1958 Map of Citadel Plateau

USGS Topo · Published 1964

About this map

The high desert terrain of the Citadel Plateau and the rugged Juniper Mtn dominate this mid-century Moffat County landscape. The northeast corner is marked by the Yampa River and its accompanying Maybell Ditch, while the southern reaches reveal the development of the energy industry at the Maudlin Gulch Oil Field. Scattered throughout the draws and gulches are several established livestock operations, including the Shelton Ranch, Sweeney Ranch, and the Keystone Ranch. This 1950s survey captures the region's reliance on isolated springs and man-made features like the Dry Lake Reservoir to support life and industry in a land defined by features like Escarpment Peak and Wolf Mountain. Numerous Oil Wells and a prominent Pipeline trace the expansion of resource extraction across the high plains and deep canyons.
