The Red River defines the western border of this agricultural landscape, its extreme meanders carving deep loops between North Dakota and Minnesota. Near the center of the sheet, the Sandhill River winds eastward to join the larger waterway, passing just south of the community of Climax. The settlement patterns here reflect a highly organized rural grid, where the Great Northern railroad runs north-south through Climax and Nielsville, serving as a primary corridor for the region's grain-based economy. This era's land management is visible in the extensive drainage network, including County Ditch No 90 and County Ditch No 166. For local historians, several small burial grounds are documented, such as Bergit Cem, Sundet Cem, and Skavold Cem, which often represent the early foundations of these Red River Valley townships like Belmont and Vineland.
