Echo Amphitheater stands as a central landmark in this high-desert landscape where the Carson National Forest and Santa Fe National Forest meet. The terrain is defined by massive sandstone formations and dramatic elevation changes, notably across the Mesa de los Viejos and Mesa Prieta. The Rio Chama Wild and Scenic River carves through the center of the sheet, feeding south into the Abiquiu Reservoir at the junction with the Rio Puerco.
