Llaves sits at the northwestern edge of a landscape defined by dramatic elevation changes and a complex system of water management. The terrain is dominated by the high plateau of French Mesa and the nearby heights of Cerro Blanco, while the eastern boundary is protected as part of the Chama River- Canyon Wilderness. This area, within the Santa Fe National Forest, is marked by numerous seasonal drainages including Rio Gallina and Arroyo Blanco.
