The Ohio River cuts a wide valley through this region, serving as the border between the hills of Shawnee State Forest in Ohio and the creek-divided ridges of Kentucky. In the late 1940s, the river was managed by structures like Dam No 31, while the Chesapeake and Ohio railroad paralleled the southern bank through settlements like Firebrick and Kirkville. The landscape is defined by dozens of steep hollows, such as Opossum Hollow and Worley Hollow, where small communities and family landmarks are tucked away from the main river traffic.
