The Sabine River floodplain dominates this portion of East Texas, creating a complex wetland environment characterized by numerous oxbow lakes and secondary water bodies. From Lewis Lake and Brushy Lake in the west to Schwiner Lake and Charter Lake further east, the river's winding course defines the natural geography. The small community of Golden sits at the northern edge, while the northwestern outskirts of Mineola and the distinct area of West Mineola anchor the southeastern corner.
