The landscape is defined by a rigorous grid of section lines, each punctuated by numerous country schools such as Mud College, Sugarloaf School, and Salem School. Transport is anchored by the Chicago Burlington and Quincy railroad, which links the northern settlements of Roseville and Swan Creek to Youngstown. To the south, the Toledo Peoria and Western line provides vital east-west transit through Good Hope, Sciota, and the larger rail junction at Bushnell.
