Wellston and Hamden anchor this landscape along the border of Vinton and Jackson counties, where the terrain is marked by numerous water bodies and small rural settlements. The map shows a clear concentration of civic and community history in the numerous family and church burial grounds, such as Old Hamden Cem, Wyckoff Cem, and Franklin Cem. These small cemeteries are often the only remaining indicators of early family settlements near places like Lesmil and Randerson.

Water management and recreation are central themes here, evidenced by the large Lake Rupert and the nearby Wellston Reservoir. To the southeast, Lake Alma provides a focal point for the area south of Hamden. The network of township and county roads, such as Richland Furnace Rd and Adelphi State Rd, connects these scattered communities across a landscape drained by Little Raccoon Creek and its many tributaries.
