About this map

Denali National Park and the surrounding wilderness of the Matanuska-Susitna Borough are defined by an intricate network of glaciers and glacial rivers in this mid-century survey. The landscape is dominated by ice and elevation, featuring the massive Polychrome Glacier and the West Fork Glacier, which feed the West Fork Chulitna River. While much of the terrain is dedicated to the Denali Wilderness, signs of human industry and transport appear in the southeastern quadrant. The Dunkle Mine and an adjacent Landing Strip near Camp Creek indicate the localized mineral extraction and aviation-dependent access typical of the Alaskan interior during the 1950s. Surveyed originally in 1953 and 1954, the map also traces the divide between the Toklat River and Teklanika River systems, providing a clear record of the area's hydrology before later administrative boundary revisions.
