About this map

Hummelstown and the surrounding limestone valleys of Dauphin and Lebanon Counties are depicted during a period of industrial and agricultural stability. The landscape is defined by the sharp parallel ridges of the Appalachian Mountains to the north, including Blue Mountain and Second Mountain, which are pierced by dramatic water gaps like Indiantown Gap and Swatara Gap. These gaps served as vital conduits for early transportation, most notably the Philadelphia and Reading Railroad Schuylkill and Susquehanna Branch which follows the narrow corridor of Stony Creek.
