About this map

Blue Mountain and its parallel ridges form a dramatic physical barrier across this late nineteenth-century landscape, pierced only by wind and water gaps. These natural passes, such as Indiantown Gap and Swatara Gap, served as critical conduits for movement between the rolling valley floor and the high ridgelines of Peters Mountain and Stony Mountain. The Philadelphia and Reading Railroad Schuylkill and Susquehanna Branch follows the narrow corridor between these peaks, tracing Stony Creek through the gap.
