1894 Map of Junction City

About this map

The confluence of the Smoky Hill River and the Republican River forms the geographic anchor of this landscape, just west of Junction City. This 1886 survey, published later in 1894, captures the critical rail and military infrastructure of the late nineteenth century. The Fort Riley Military Reservation dominates the center of the sheet, situated where the rivers meet. Further east, the Big Blue River snakes down from the north toward Manhattan, passing through a series of valley settlements like Garrison and Stockdale. This era was defined by the expansion of western transportation, illustrated by the primary line of the Union Pacific Railroad following the river valleys, while the Kansas Central Railroad and the Junction City and Fort Kearny Railroad branch out to serve smaller communities such as Milford and Leonard. The map also details early township divisions and small interior centers like Riley Center and Bala.
