The northern slopes of the Brooks Range define this mid-century landscape, where the Continental Divide separates the northward-flowing drainages of the Arctic from the interior. Most of the western half of the territory is encompassed by the Naval Petroleum Reserve No 4, reflecting the strategic importance of the region's energy resources during the Cold War era. The survey documents a wilderness of water and stone, centered on the braided channels of the Killik River as it winds north toward Killik Bend and the Colville River.
