Backbone Mountain dominates the western topography of this region, where the Maryland and West Virginia border is defined by the winding course of the Potomac River. The landscape reveals a mid-century industrial and coal-mining corridor centered around Kitzmiller, Blaine, and East Vindex. Local transport and industry are clearly marked by the Baltimore and Ohio and Western Maryland railroads, including the notable Hitchcock Tunnel cutting through the ridges. The 1974 photorevisions illustrate significant changes to the environment, most notably the introduction of Bloomington Lake in the eastern portion of the map, which altered the original river valley. Genealogists will find a wealth of local landmarks, from the Mt Zion School and Walnut Bottom Church to family-named burial sites like Barnard Cem and Bray Cem.
