The Little Missouri River snakes through the northern portion of this Badlands landscape, defining the topography and drainage patterns across the McKenzie and Dunn County line. Much of the western and central territory is protected as part of the Little Missouri National Grassland, a vast public expanse characterized by intricate erosion and branching creek systems. A network of seasonal waterways, including Big Gulch, Cottonwood Creek, and Chase Creek, carves deep into the plateaus, creating the dramatic relief typical of western North Dakota. The only notable modern infrastructure is 10th St NW, which provides limited access into this complex network of draws and ridges. Other drainages like Crosby Creek, Dry Creek, and Norred Creek illustrate the natural erosion patterns that have shaped this terrain over millennia.
