1951 Map of Lone Mountain

USGS Topo · Published 1953

About this map

Lone Mountain and the jagged outcrops of the Sweetwater Rocks dominate this high-desert landscape in Natrona County. Surveyed as part of the Department of the Interior program for the development of the Missouri River Basin, the topography reveals a terrain defined by dramatic elevation changes and essential water sources. In the northern reaches, Sage Hen Creek and Sage Hen Springs provide rare riparian points in an otherwise arid expanse. The southern half of the quadrangle is marked by the complex geological formations of Countryman Peak and the passage at Beef Gap. This 1951 field-checked survey captures the area before modern infrastructure, showing only the most primitive trails and unimproved dirt roads winding through the granite landmarks and the distinctive Pocket Vice drainage.
