Lykens and Williamstown anchor the industrial landscape of the southern anthractie region during the late nineteenth century. The settlement pattern follows the narrow valleys carved by Wiconisco Creek and Mahantango Creek, where development is closely tied to the massive ridges of Coal or Thick Mountain and Bear Mountain. The dominance of the mining and timber economy is evident in the dense rail infrastructure, including the Summit Branch Railroad and various lines of the P. and R. Railroad system.

North of these mining hubs, the geography shifts toward agricultural and rural communities like Klingerstown, Valley View, and the curiously named Rough and Ready. The map also captures the early transportation network via the Stone Cabin Path, which crosses the high terrain near Spechty Kopf.
