Lake Maurepas dominates the western half of this 1968 landscape, marking the convergence of the Natalbany River and Tickfaw River before they exit through the passes. The low-lying marshlands of Jones Island are bifurcated by the long corridor of the Illinois Central railroad, which provides the primary north-south spine for small settlements in the wetlands. Along this rail line, the community of Manchac (Akers PO) sits at the critical junction where North Pass and Manchac Pass bridge the gap toward Lake Pontchartrain.
