1894 Map of Marthas Vineyard

About this map

The coastal village of Edgartown and the burgeoning summer destinations of Cottage City and Oak Bluffs anchor this late nineteenth-century survey of the island. Following fieldwork by E.B. Clark in 1887, the map illustrates a landscape defined by its saltwater ponds and maritime infrastructure. The M. V. R. R. railroad line is visible running along the eastern shore, connecting the harbor at Edgartown Harbor to the northern settlements. This rail connection was a vital artery for the island's early tourism industry and local commerce before the rise of automobile travel.
