The Little Laramie River and Laramie River dictate the settlement patterns of this Albany County landscape, where a sophisticated network of irrigation systems like the Hecht and Farrell Ditch and Mammoth Canal supported high-altitude ranching. Ranching family history is well-represented by the numerous named homesteads throughout the flats, including Forbes Ranch, McGill Ranch, and Lohan Ranch. The Union Pacific Railroad cuts through the center of the quadrangle, serving the small community of Hatton and the nearby Millbrook. To the south, the terrain rises sharply toward Table Mountain and the eastern edge of the Medicine Bow National Forest, while the northern half preserves a stretch of the historic Overland Trail near the McCue Ranch, marking the route of early westward migration across the Wyoming plains.
