The Milwaukee River meanders southward through a landscape of evolving townships and expanding industrial corridors at the end of the nineteenth century. While the city of Milwaukee shows a dense grid of urban development radiating from Milwaukee Bay, the northern reaches remain punctuated by smaller agricultural and milling hubs. These outliers, such as Thiensville and Mequon, are connected to the urban core by the Chicago and Northwestern RR, illustrating the early rail-dependent growth of the region.
