The landscape is defined by the prominent Mogote Ridge and its highest point, Mogote Peak, which watch over a complex system of drainage and storage including Laguna de las Ranas and Laguna Pinabete Mocho. Small-scale seasonal encampments and ranching outposts such as Harris Bear Camp and Rancherilla indicate the transitory human presence in this area of northern New Mexico during the mid-20th century.
