Whetstone Creek and Little Creek carve through the southern Ozark plateau on this mid-century survey, which records a landscape transitioning from rural settlement to public timberland. While the southern portion of the map is dominated by the Mark Twain National Forest, the northern sections show a dense network of country schools and churches that served a once-populated backcountry. Settlements like Mountain Grove are connected by the St Louis San Francisco railroad, which runs across the top of the sheet.
