About this map

The Denver and Rio Grande Railroad follows the steep canyon of the Animas River, providing the primary transit artery through this high-altitude landscape. During the late nineteenth-century survey period, small settlements like Beartown and Needleton served as remote outposts for mining and railway operations. High peaks dominate the terrain, with the Grenadier Range and the West Needle Mountains housing summits such as Sunlight Peak, Mt. Eolus, and Windom Mtn.. In the southern portion of the map, Logtown sits near the Upper Park Reservoir, while the presence of a Quartz Mill on Bear Creek indicates the localized industrial efforts to extract value from the surrounding San Juan National Forest. Water is abundant in the form of alpine basins like Chicago Basin and Vallecito Basin, which gather runoff into significant drainages including the Florida River and Vallecito Creek.
