Evidence of much earlier habitation appears in the southeast near the Crystal River, where several Shell Mounds and an Indian Mound are recorded along the banks. The intricate network of tidal waterways, including the Salt River and Dolphin Cr, gives way to The Suncoast Keys and the St Martins Marsh Aquatic Preserve. Inland, the economy is further represented by Mines located north of the primary settlement.
