Ashokan Reservoir dominates the northwestern corner of this landscape, its creation necessitating the relocation of settlements like Shokan and West Hurley as the Board of Water Supply modified the Catskill watershed for New York City's needs. The central valley is defined by the winding course of Esopus Creek and the Wallkill River, which meet the Rondout Creek near the industrial and transport hub of Rosendale. This area was a critical junction of rail and water infrastructure at the start of the 20th century, where the Ulster and Delaware railroad and the New York Ontario and Western line serviced the agricultural and mining communities of Marbletown and Rochester. To the south, the terrain rises sharply toward the Shawangunk Ridge, marked by landmarks such as Bonticou Crag, Eagle Cliff, and the resort grounds of Mohonk Lake, illustrating the region's early transition into a destination for recreation.
