The confluence of the Sultan River and the Skykomish River anchors this landscape at the town of Sultan. During the mid-20th century, the Burlington Northern railroad carved a primary corridor through the valley, supporting a local economy tied to the surrounding timberlands and waterways. To the north of the town, a Landing Strip and the Sultan Basin Road indicate the early development of aviation and transport infrastructure in this corner of Snohomish County.

Further south, the terrain rises into upland basins filled with distinctive water bodies like Lake Elsie, Cedar Ponds Lake, and the humorously named Drunken Charlie Lake. This area is crisscrossed by an Old Railroad Grade and various truck trails, such as the Cherry Valley Truck Trail, which reveal the historical footprint of logging operations. The boundary between Snohomish and King counties passes through the southern portion of the sheet near Cherry Creek and Stossel Creek.
