About this map

The Kotsina River and Chitina River define the drainage of this interior Alaskan wilderness, recorded in the early 1950s. The landscape is marked by high summits including Alice Peak and Hubbard Peak, where glacial ice like Long Glacier remains prominent. Human activity is largely limited to the periphery, with a remote Mine and scattered cabins located along the upper tributaries like Copper Creek and Elliott Creek. The southern edge of the sheet shows the route at Strelna, providing a rare point of access near Strelna Lake. This area was later incorporated into the Wrangell-Saint Elias National Park and Preserve, and the map serves as a primary record of the terrain before later administrative shifts and environmental changes altered the visibility of its glaciated valleys.
