Volcano Reef dominates the southwestern portion of this landscape, where the high-altitude terrain of the Lewis and Clark National Forest meets the plains. This mid-1990s survey illustrates a sharp transition from the protected wilderness of the Bob Marshall Wilderness and the deep cuts of Blackleaf Canyon to an active resource-extraction zone further east. The eastern half of the map is defined by the Blackleaf Wildlife Management Area, where a network of infrastructure including a Pipeline and multiple Gas Wells and Gas Well sites are positioned among the drainage systems of Cow Creek and Muddy Creek. The hydrological pattern is intricate, showing the headwaters and branches of the Dry Fork Marias River and numerous coulees such as Gansman Coulee and Toms Coulee that carve through the foothills.
