Wales sits at the foot of the mountains on the western edge of the Sanpete Valley, a small settlement positioned where the high desert terrain meets the agricultural flats. The landscape is defined by the transition from the irrigated valley floor, through which the San Pitch River flows, to the deeply incised drainages of the Uinta National Forest. Significant topographical features like Big Mountain and Horse Mountain dominate the western half of the map, separated by a complex network of canyons including Wales Canyon, Axhandle Canyon, and Petes Canyon. Evidence of early resource extraction and land management appears in the form of several Gravel Pits, a Mine, and numerous Jeep Trails that penetrate the mountain draws. Natural water sources are scattered throughout the dryer uplands, marked as Springs and Water Hollow, which historically served as vital points for livestock and local travel.
