Warsaw serves as the hub of this late nineteenth-century landscape, positioned at the confluence of the Grand River and the Osage River. Long before the construction of modern dams and reservoirs, the region was defined by its intricate river systems and fertile valley floors. The Missouri Pacific Railroad snakes south from Cole Camp through Lincoln, providing a vital overland connection to the river commerce at Warsaw.

Smaller rural centers like Fairfield, Boylers Mills, and Palo Pinto anchor the surrounding townships, which are dissected by numerous waterways including the Pomme De Terre River and Buffalo Creek. The topographic survey, conducted by H.L. Baldwin Jr. in 1885, captures a network of islands such as Wrights Island and Warsaw Island, which have since been significantly altered by the hydroelectric projects of the mid-twentieth century.
