Ancient earthworks and modern healthcare facilities meet along the western bank of the Scioto River north of Chillicothe. The presence of the Mound City Group National Monument and additional Indian Mounds throughout Union and Deerfield townships highlights the deep history of this river valley. By the early 1960s, the landscape was a mix of agriculture and institutional development, dominated by the expansive VA Hospital complex and the nearby County Fairgrounds.
