Tilly Foster Mine and the industrial activity of the late 19th century define this portrait of the Hudson Highlands and the New York Connecticut Boundary Line. The landscape is dominated by the nascent water supply system for New York City, featuring major impoundments like Boyds Corners Reservoir, Middle Branch Reservoir, and West Branch Reservoir. These engineering feats restructured the local geography, particularly around the transportation hubs of Brewster and Carmel.

Railroad networks, including the Harlem Div and the New York City and Northern RR, weave through the narrow valleys, connecting rural milk-producing hamlets like Farmer Mills and Croton Falls to the urban markets. To the south and east, the transition into Connecticut is marked by the ridges of Ridgefield and the waters of Mamanasco Lake, illustrating the varied terrain of the tri-state area before mid-20th-century suburbanization changed the character of Katonah and South Salem.
