Steese National Conservation Area encompasses much of this interior Alaska landscape, characterized by high ridges and a dense network of creek drainages. The topography is anchored by Porcupine Dome and Pinnell Mountain in the south, while the northern sections are defined by the winding course of Preacher Creek and its many tributaries, including North Fork and Loper Creek.

Resource extraction and early prospecting are evidenced by a Placer Mine located in the southeastern corner near the headwaters of Porcupine Creek. The intricate drainage patterns, such as Ninetyeight Pup and McKinley Creek, illustrate the typical watershed structure of the Yukon-Koyukuk region.
