Pearisburg and the winding New River serve as the focal points for this late 19th-century reconnaissance of Southwest Virginia and the southern border of West Virginia. The landscape is defined by the heavy industrial and transportation network of the era, most notably the Norfolk and Western Railroad and the specialized Altoona Narrow Gauge Railroad which served the Altoona Mines. Before the proliferation of modern bridges, river crossings were managed by a series of family-named operations including Snidows Ferry, Ingles Ferry, and Peppers Ferry, marking critical transit points for local commerce.
