Denali Highway cuts through the northeast corner of this subarctic landscape, providing a rare human corridor through the Matanuska-Susitna region. The terrain is defined by a massive complex of wetlands and high peaks, centered around the prominent Butte Lake. Glacial drainage patterns are visible through the paths of the Susitna River and numerous tributaries like Wickersham Creek and Monahan Creek.

Remote survey markers such as VABM Madison 5187 and VABM Win 5896 indicate the high-altitude topography of the Talkeetna Mountains foothills. A lone Gaging Sta along the river near Windy Cr suggests the early hydrologic monitoring of this backcountry waterway during the mid-20th century. The map captures a moment after initial aerial photography in 1949 but before significant modern development altered these traditional migration and drainage corridors.
