Little York and the surrounding townships of Gibson, Vernon, and Franklin appear in this late 1950s survey as a landscape of rural schoolhouses and family-named landmarks. The topography is defined by the Muscatatuck River to the north and the complex drainage of numerous hollows, including Bane and Rutherford Hollow, which carve into the hills of the Jackson-Washington State Forest. A high concentration of hilltop churches and cemeteries, such as Mt Carmel Ch and its adjacent Cem, suggests a community deeply rooted in these ridgelines.
