About this map

The White Mountains dominate this high-altitude landscape in the Fourth Judicial Division, where extreme topography defines the drainage patterns of the interior. A single Cabin near the banks of Beaver Creek suggests the seasonal presence of hunters or trappers in a region otherwise devoid of permanent settlements. Steep ridges and high summits, including Cache Mountain and peaks marked by geodetic markers such as Vabm 4772 and VABM 4153 Fossil, separate the deep valleys of Willow Creek and Fossil Creek. This mid-century survey, based on 1951 aerial photography, documents the untouched character of the Alaskan wilderness before significant modern infrastructure reached these northern elevations. The map reveals a complex network of tributaries, with Sheep Creek and O'Brien Creek carving paths through the massive limestone formations that give the range its name.
