About this map

Los Alamos sits at the northern edge of this coastal California landscape, where the town site is defined by the course of San Antonio Creek as it flows through the Los Alamos Valley. The topography is a complex network of canyons and ridges, dominated by the Purisima Hills and the Santa Rita Hills. Settlement is concentrated near the town and along the drainage of Drum Canyon, which provides a passage toward the southern Santa Rita Valley. Many of the smaller drainages, such as Cañada de la Laguna and Cañada de los Palos Blancos, retain their traditional Spanish names, reflecting the area's land grant history. Genealogists will find the Los Alamos Cem clearly marked on the northern slopes above the valley floor. The map also identifies the ranching settlement of Campbell and prominent peaks like Redrock Mountain.
