About this map

The Colorado River winds through the heart of the Texas Hill Country in this early 1930s survey, marking the boundary between Burnet and Llano Counties. The landscape is defined by its dramatic relief and intricate drainage systems, from the prominent heights of Pack Saddle Mtn and Sandy Mtn to the many hollows like Lime Hollow and Stub Hollow that feed into Sandy Creek. Small rural communities and rural educational outposts are scattered throughout the hills, including the settlement of Upshaw and localized schools such as Sandy Mtn Sch and La Vista Sch. At Gaddy Crossing, a local ford provides passage over the river, reflecting the essential river-and-road connections of the era. The mapping work, compiled in part from Air Corps aerial photography, captures the transition of the Central Texas frontier into a more formal network of surveyed lands and rural homesteads.
