Niagara River frontage and the international boundary with the Dominion of Canada dominate this late nineteenth-century landscape. The industrial and transit hub of Lockport serves as a focal point, where the rail network converges amidst the townships of Royalton and Cambria. Along the northern shore of Lake Ontario, small lakeside settlements like Olcott and Wilson are connected by the Central R. R. and early carriage routes such as Lake Road.

The interior reveals a dense network of nineteenth-century agricultural hamlets and civil landmarks, including the Tuscarora Indian Reservation and the planned community of Model City. At the mouth of the river, military history is preserved at Fort Niagara and Fort Missassauga. The intricate hydrology of the region is mapped in detail, from the many creeks draining into the lake to the numerous named islands like Grand Island and Buckhorn Id. that dot the river channels south of the falls.
