About this map

Rockwood and the winding Casselman River dominate this Somerset County landscape, which by the late 1960s reflected a deep intersection of natural resources and heavy transport. The river valley serves as a critical corridor for both the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad and the Western Maryland Railroad, which trace the southern bends near Casselman. This industrial character is further emphasized by several strip mines visible in the eastern uplands near Gebhart and south of the river.
