Sardinia and Mowrystown anchor this rural landscape in the Brown and Highland County borderlands. The southern portion of the sheet is defined by the Norfolk and Western rail corridor, which passes through the village of Sardinia and skirts the Sardinia Reservoir. The terrain is deeply etched by the winding course of White Oak Creek and its many tributaries, including Indian Run and Lick Run, creating a patchwork of wooded hollows and upland farmsteads typical of the Virginia Military District.
