Thompson Ridge and the winding course of the Brazos River define the character of this southeast Texas landscape during the early 1950s. The settlement of Thompsons is established at the junction of the Atchison Topeka and Santa Fe and the Missouri Pacific Railroad, serving as a hub for the surrounding Thompsons Field petroleum operations. Numerous Oil Wells and storage tanks dot the terrain, particularly around the residential cluster at Humble Camp.

Southward, the landscape shifts toward large-scale agricultural and institutional use at the Darrington State Prison Farm. Local history is preserved in landmarks such as the Sacred Heart Church and the site of the Booker T Washington School (Aband). Water management is evident throughout the quadrangle, from the natural flow of Oyster Creek and Rabbs Bayou to the industrial South Texas Water Company Canal.
