The Erie Mine and Whiteface Mine are surrounded by extensive Mine Dumps, while the massive Taconite Processing Plant and its associated Tailings Pond illustrate the scale of post-war mineral processing. Transport is facilitated by a network of heavy rail including the Duluth Missabe and Iron Range and the specialized Erie Mining Company Railroad.

South of the heavy industrial zone, the community of Aurora sits near the Forest Hill Cemetery and local landmarks like the Hospital.
