Kittatinny Mountain dominates this late 19th-century landscape where the Delaware River carves through the ridge at the Delaware Watergap. The region is defined by a dense network of competing railroads, including the Delaware Lackawanna And Western and the New York, Susquehanna And Western, which serviced the burgeoning industrial centers and mineral resources of the corridor. In Northampton County, the slate industry is well-established near Bangor, evidenced by the Old Bangor Slate Quarry and numerous Slate Quarries.
