1953 Map of Echo Ampitheater

About this map

The Piedra Lumbre Grant defines much of this landscape, where the high desert terrain of north-central New Mexico meets the canyon-carving waters of the Rio Chama. This 1953 survey, updated in the late 1970s, captures a transitional period for the river valley as the Rio Chama Reservoir began to reshape the local hydrology. The towering sandstone formations are anchored by the Echo Amphitheater, a natural landmark that lent its name to the quadrangle and served as a focal point for the nearby Echo Campground.
