About this map

The labyrinthine wetlands and coastal tundra of Alaska's Hooper Bay region dominate this early 1950s survey. Large freshwater bodies like Kagankaguti Lake, Kawialik Lake, and Kingokakthluk Lake dot the northern landscape, surrounded by an intricate network of waterways. The Kokechik River meanders through the central portion of the quadrangle, joined by the Piyukenuk River and the Chelunginik River. This area is characterized by low-lying, watery terrain with very little relief, though the lone prominence of Ingrisarak Mtn rises in the south. Mapped by the Army Map Service from aerial photography, the sheet documents a wilderness area defined by its hydrology, where the Kuttak River flows through a landscape largely void of roads or permanent structures, reflecting the natural state of the Yukon-Kuskokwim Delta during this era.
